Importance of Bird Climate Control

poultrychillers-ventilationThe importance of climate control in poultry houses cannot be understated. Birds housed in improper climate conditions develop digestive, respiratory and behavioral issues. The younger the bird, and the more productive they are, the more sensitive they are to climate changes and irregularities. These factors are humidity, air composition, light, temperature, and air circulation. Temperature factors are dependent on housing style, feeding rate, humidity, body weight, age, draft, and overall health of the birds. It is important to monitor animal behavior while they are at rest to ensure proper temperature needs are being met. The use of multiple thermometers at various heights is also critical. Different areas of a house may have drastically different temperatures. It is important to keep the temperature as level as possible. The age of the bird is critical to knowing what temperatures are optimal for them.

The humidity of the air is important when trying to control microorganisms and respiratory infections. If the humidity is too high the condensation promotes mold and bacterial growth. Air composition is determined by the levels of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Ammonia, Hydrogen Sulphide, and Carbon Monoxide. It also pertains to “dust” contaminants, a combination of feathers, feed, litter, and manure. These gases and contaminants are highly important to monitor and regulate within houses to ensure safety of the poultry and people who care for them. Ensuring proper maintenance and ventilation procedures controls most air contamination factors.
